Living Greyhawk Gazetteer Chapter 7
Alright, this will finish off this volume, which took much longer than I had originally expected. And there's still a lot of stuff left to do, and only half a month left to cover it. So, let's go through the Greyhawk gods.
One of the first things I noticed is that the gods are all listed alphabetically, full stop. It goes from Al'Akbar all the way to Zuoken. Why is this worth noticing? Because there's no separate pantheons; everyone is just lumped together. In the 1983 Greyhawk boxed set, the gods were listed with their racial affiliation so you could know that, for example, Kord and Wee Jas are Suel gods, while Heironeous and Pholtus are Oeridian. Some gods were held in common throughout the Flanaess, but you generally knew which racial group the gods focused their attention on.
The way it's done here would be like if the Deities & Demigods book lumped Horus, Kali, Thor and Zeus together without differentiating their cultural and racial backgrounds. I'm not really a fan of it. With 192 pages, they could easily have fit in a table to split the gods up like they did in the original boxed set or the 2nd edition From the Ashes set. But there is no table, just a quick note in each deity's description as to which pantheon they belong to.
So, what I've decided to do is simply list the gods in their racial groupings to give a better feel for how the religions of the Flanaess would be split up. Some of the gods are held in common, and I'll list them at the end. But for now, we'll do it this way. The deities that appear in the Player's Handbook will be bolded; those that are common throughout the Flanaess will be italicized; some will be both.

There are a few oddballs here that don't categorize into any of the above lists. Sehanine Moonbow, an elven deity and the wife of Corellon Larethian, also gets mentioned here, although none of the other Seldarine deities make an appearance. An odd inclusion, but there it is. And Tharizdun, the Cthulhu-like god of Eternal Darkness, Decay, Entropy, and Insanity is here as well; he is so obscure that he isn't even categorized in the earlier boxes. There's also Wastri, the demigod of Amphibians, Bigotry, and Self-Deception. He's also the god of bullywugs, which haven't appeared in any 3rd edition material as of yet. Finally, there's Ye'Cind, another elven demigod of Music and Magical Songs, part of the Seldarine.
Alright, so what do we see here? First of all, obviously there are a lot more gods to choose from in this book. I'll note that none of the demihuman deities listed in the Player's Handbook are included here. But there are a lot of gods that have cross-pollinated into the common pantheon for all of the Flanaess. All of the Flan gods but one are common, most of the Oeridian and Baklunish pantheons...but only two from the Suel. The Suel gods keep to themselves, and haven't become commonly worshiped. One could argue that the inclusion of Kord and Wee Jas into the Player's Handbook list makes them common, and I could be persuaded by that.
What else? The Flan have three very evil gods in what is otherwise a pretty small grouping. Iuz, Nerull and Vecna all come from the Flan mythos. All of the Baklunish gods except Al'Akbar are of neutral alignment; they truly don't care about good or evil.
There are no new domains or spells here, which saves some time. This book is designed to work with the core rules, rather than adding a whole bunch of crunch. Unlike some settings that may or may not be coming out in 2001...
Alright, that about wraps this up. If you see anything interesting in these lists that I missed, let me know your thoughts in the comments. The last couple of pages are just a rehashing of the rules for creating and playing a Living Greyhawk character, including the regional breakdowns which I may or may not have mentioned that I don't particularly like.
