Map-a-Week: Catacombs

Well, I forgot to post this yesterday, so I'll add it today. This is the latest Map-a-Week from WOTC, the Catacombs. It could be used for pretty much any post-apocalyptic setting. It could, in fact, be used for a D&D game set in a normal D&D setting. But it's not quite fitting my idea for Tasiri, so I'm going to leave it out. Still, it's here for posterity.

Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, Chapters 1-3

Okay, so now we're going to dive into the expanded Greyhawk Gazetteer designed for the Living Greyhawk campaign. There are quite a few similarities with the earlier Gazetteer  product that I reviewed back in September. However, this is greatly expanded from that product. Unfortunately, I don't have the map that came with it, just like I didn't have the map that came with the earlier product. I'm going to have to print off my own copy, I suppose. Pain in the butt, but it is what it is. So, since this product is a chunky 192 pages, I'm going to take a few days to go over the whole thing. The first three chapters are quite short, so I'll cover them in this post. We begin with the first chapter, entitled Greyhawk's World. Player's Handbook, Chapter Three

Today, we will talk about character classes. There are a few things to note right off the bat: First, there are no 'subclasses' anymore; barbarians are not connected with fighters, and druids are a separate beast from clerics. So, all classes are just that: Classes. No subclasses. It's not a big deal, just something I noticed real quick. The second thing I noticed is that standardization is the core of this game. They are standardizing a LOT of stuff here. The most noticeable one thus far is that all eleven classes use the exact same experience point table. It doesn't matter if you're a wizard, a fighter, a monk or a rogue, you're using the same XP requirements for every class. And every class gets a feat every 3rd level. And an ability score increase every 4th level. I'm not sure I like this very much. Closing in on the release date, and we've got a bigger batch to go through today. In addition to the Countdown article, Dragon had its annual 'dragons' issue, including our first look at a 3rd edition monster writeup. But first...we have  Ember, the Human Monk  to look at. They formatted this sheet differently from the prior ones. It's not spaced out very well, and everything is listed in a column format without abbreviations. It's the same information as the previous characters, but it just feels off. And the artwork makes it clear that Ember is not from the far East, but rather the Dark Continent. Interestingly, the levels on this sheet are 1st, 3rd and 7th. I'm not sure why they did the switch, but there it is. For 1st level, Ember's top stats are Strength and Wisdom, and she's skilled in acrobatic-type skills.
