Map-a-Week: Sacred Caverns

So, to close out the month's Map-a-Week set, we have the Sacred Caverns. This is the last of the dwarven caverns that I didn't get a chance to populate this month. It's quite the lengthy complex, isn't it? I'm going to have to come back to this; January won't be as crazy as December was, I hope. And it will take a bit of time to actually find all the numbers; they aren't in any particular order. Those four big rooms on the top right are numbered as 1, 7, 12, and 18. So, no rhyme or reason to the numbering on this one.

Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, Chapters 1-3

Okay, so now we're going to dive into the expanded Greyhawk Gazetteer designed for the Living Greyhawk campaign. There are quite a few similarities with the earlier Gazetteer  product that I reviewed back in September. However, this is greatly expanded from that product. Unfortunately, I don't have the map that came with it, just like I didn't have the map that came with the earlier product. I'm going to have to print off my own copy, I suppose. Pain in the butt, but it is what it is. So, since this product is a chunky 192 pages, I'm going to take a few days to go over the whole thing. The first three chapters are quite short, so I'll cover them in this post. We begin with the first chapter, entitled Greyhawk's World. Closing in on the release date, and we've got a bigger batch to go through today. In addition to the Countdown article, Dragon had its annual 'dragons' issue, including our first look at a 3rd edition monster writeup. But first...we have  Ember, the Human Monk  to look at. They formatted this sheet differently from the prior ones. It's not spaced out very well, and everything is listed in a column format without abbreviations. It's the same information as the previous characters, but it just feels off. And the artwork makes it clear that Ember is not from the far East, but rather the Dark Continent. Interestingly, the levels on this sheet are 1st, 3rd and 7th. I'm not sure why they did the switch, but there it is. For 1st level, Ember's top stats are Strength and Wisdom, and she's skilled in acrobatic-type skills. Dungeon Master's Guide Chapter 4

Yeesh...another lengthy chapter. But then, this book is 256 pages long, and the first chapter was only 20 or so pages. So yeah, they're all going to be long, I guess. Anyway, this chapter is about adventures, specifically how to create them and make them interesting for players. Away we go! So there are two basic types of adventures: Site-based adventures (such as the Tomb of Horrors or the Keep on the Borderlands), and Event-based adventures (Dragonlance, especially the 2nd adventure, Dragons of Flame). My preference has always been site-based, but then I grew up reading the old dungeon modules which were almost entirely site-based up until the aforementioned Dragonlance appeared. Site-based adventures can be static, where the only thing that changes is the bodies left in the wake of the adventurers, and dynamic, where things are constantly in motion regardless of what the PCs are doing.
